Chandler Turner makes a return visit to the podcast to discuss the impact of accurate business communications. It is not just what you say, but how you say it. In many cases we say far too much, in an overly technical or jargon riddled way. This is a really good interview packed full of interesting and validated concepts for business communication.

When I reviewed the interview for this podcast I realized there is room for tweaking on my own business websites. I think when you first get a web site to where you are O.K. with the content it tends to be intimidating to try and tweak it further out of fear of going backwards on the project. While one must face their fears, I am as guilty as anyone in the case of my own business websites.

I hope you will take a moment to log into your iTunes account and review our program. Any comment – good OR bad – helps tell iTunes the Web Strategies Podcast is relevant. Thanks for listening!

My guest today is a fixture on the LA radio scene, Rich Boerner (pronounced “Burner”) . I first met Rich many years ago when we did a web site for his voice-over business. he recently called me looking for an air check of a show he hosted for pay-per-view in Philadelphia that featured an Ozzie Osbourne concert. To give you a hint – it was likely one of the very “first ever” pay-per-view concerts. The air-check was also an example of very early internet video, and that’s why I had it originally… it was included in that website I did for him years ago.

Anyway… we got to talking and I discovered that Rich has transcended the air waves and taken his radio chops directly to the folks over the internet. Seems media giant CBS decided it would be better to cut expenses by changing from a Hot Talk format to a Hot Music format. Sadly it actually makes sense as you will hear in this fascinating story of innovation which I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.

In a true case of irony this podcast about WordPress as a Content management System was delayed because the WordPress database on my server was compromised by a SQL injection trojan, a type of computer virus. WordPress is the software platform that makes up the back end – the area where you log-in and upload blog posts.

It was not just the Web Strategies Podcast site – but hundreds of sites housed the the vast Rack Space server farm – that’s the company I lease my server from. To be fair Rack Space has completed steps to fix the hole in the security flaw – and as I understand it, that flaw was inherent to earlier versions of WordPress. I just upgraded to the newest version of WordPress which came out earlier today (3.0) and changed the necessary passwords to keep this from happening again.

My Guest today is a former co-worker and current technology partner; Brian Walker of Warp 10 Media. Our relationship is a fun one – Brian is a regular wiz at PHP programming, an intellectual giant, and like me a huge fan of Science Fiction and fantasy films. So he is sometimes really serious and sometimes just a Star Trek geek like me… I think you will find this conversation fascinating – in a Mr. Spock kind of way

In this podcast I catch you up on what has been happening in my company, and talk to a former radio colleague of mine, Andy Hilton about his new site called recruit757.com.

In real estate that has one meaning, in business another… at least in this century. And for me it has still another – as in – “what!? Did you fall off the face of the earth??” My business – IMS Strategic Internet Marketing – has been really busy over the past year – and being a relatively small operation – well up till now a miniature operation – I was just running out of steam before getting around to updating my Facebook, LinkedIn, or Plaxo – never mind getting out my first tweet!

Andy Hilton - Owner recruit757.com

In the past few weeks I brought Amy Whitley into the business to help with project management and billing and it has taken a lot of pressure off of my schedule. Amy will be working her way through school helping me make sure IMS’s clients are happy. That’s a win-win-win – I love working with Amy, the clients all love her – and she actually gets around to doing the billing where I found it hard to make time to deal with it. Amy makes a cameo in this podcast.

Besides that, what have we been up to? A few projects that you will not see because they are not for the public side of the Internet – and a few that you will. One that you will is called Recruit 757 dot com, and is the brain child of a former radio colleague of mine, Andy Hilton. You’ll hear an interesting – although kind of noisy – interview I did today in a Sushi Restaurant in Norfolk Virginia. A shout out to Local TV LLC – the company that owns WTKR TV in Norfolk, and provider of Andy’s “real” job on the sales team there. As always thanks for listening!

In this podcast I talk about email marketing – and we are back to an audio version for episode 10 – I enjoyed doing the last podcast with video but I did not want to wait too long to post another.

I had a great day today reconnecting with Constant Contact. That’s a major long-time vendor for email marketing services, and I was one of their very first dealers back in 2003. In fact it was not even called Constant Contact back then – it was called Roving Software. It has been interesting to see this company steadily grow. They make email marketing pretty easy for users on many levels.

If you can only do wizard driven templates with the art work built in – they do that. If you are a slick HTML person you can customize your campaigns to a very fine detail. It is easy to manipulate your database into multiple categories. And since my company, IMS Strategic Internet Marketing Services is again an active dealer I can throw in a free trial…

Re-establishing my dealer account took some doing.

In about 2005 I was elected to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Wireless LLC, DBA Atrius. At that time I converted my existing dealer agreement with Constant Contact for use by Pinnacle/Atrius which included an extensive personal contact database. During my tenure, most Pinnacle/Atrius Customers were added to this master database. I have long since left Pinnacle/Atrius and recently launched IMS Internet Marketing Services. So here is the problem – there is no practical way for me to distinguish between my original personal contact list, and names added later for use by Pinnacle/Atrius.

There were almost 5000 names in there that may or may not want to do business with me… and although most of them were probably dial up customers and have no need for an Internet Marketing company like IMS – if only 10% did hold some interest … well that would be more customers than I could handle at the current size of the company. Not a bad problem to have.

The other problem is that my company provides high level email marketing consulting and one of the cardinal rules is:

“It’s Not The Technology – It’s The Relationship”.

So yes technically, I could send out 5000 emails tonight shamelessly asking former Atrius clients for business – but not only is that by definition “SPAM” – it would really tick off a lot of people – not the least of whom are the other owners of that company.

I solved it by changing the dealer account status into a Confirmed Opt-in (a.k.a. double opt-in) which is the most rigorous method of obtaining permission to send email communications. It requires the contact (email address owner) to affirmatively respond to an email confirmation request in order to be added to an email list. If the contact does not affirmatively respond, he or she will not receive any further email communications from you.

I give a little more back ground and some pointers in this, the tenth episode of the Web Strategies Podcast.

I am also featuring our new theme song- Westward Leaning – enjoy!

Why Do I Need To Know about Twitter?

A friend of mine has asked me to make a presentation for his sales staff. in order to keep my remarks brief, I found myself trying to jot down as few points as possible about how buying habits have changed. What I came up with was a case to pay attention to twitter.

National consumer behaviors influence local buying habits and always have. The method of delivering marketing messages has undergone a fundamental change on both a national and local level. In order to keep pace with your customers evolving buying habits let’s do a thumbnail review of how people are influenced to buy.

In the media age the masses were made aware of new products and services from a limited number of central sources. In the 1800′s that was print, mainly newspapers, magazines, and catalogs.

In the 1900′s mass marketing followed entertainment venues from print to broadcast. From radio to television to a slowly fading print media, the same processes of disseminating marketing messages through a limited number of central sources prevailed.

in the 21st century the distribution channel has blurred. Print has continued to fade into the internet, motion pictures are being delivered as digital files, radio is available online and the music they play on iPod, and television is scattered over hundreds of cable channels and on the Internet.

The blurring of distribution channels has had an effect on the public that is reflected fairly well in the new ad campaign for Microsoft Bing.

Today people are influenced to buy differently. Instead of a small number of central distribution points for entertainment and information there are a large number of individualized sources. These include text messages, emails, and posts to twitter, also known as tweets.

This message is hammered home again and again if you are listening. Look at the recent protests in Iran. Hundreds of just plain folks risking their lives to text and send cell phone video images of the truth.

When Michael Jackson died there were hundreds of thousands of messages racing across twitter within minutes. Many people found out about this event from their friends via text and twitter and only then turned on their television sets to watch. This is true despite the fact that most twenty – somethings are too young to care about the King of Pop. So who is doing all that tweeting? Everyone.

The Web Strategies Podcast is a program dedicated to the technology and techniques of marketing your business on the internet. I think it’s pretty clear that the technology now must include a video element.

In this first Video version of the Web Strategies Podcast we are only talking about how this first video was produced. I used a sort of “poor man’s green screen” process to create the video for several reasons. First, and most obviously the video was produced in my home studio. In the video we discuss how problematic it would be to move my entire setup to my business offices. In all likelihood this particular office will be temporary as my marketing company is starting to gain momentum. (IMS Strategic Internet Marketing) I can see a time very soon when additional employees will require additional office space.

Sony DCR-VX2100

The second reason for the inexpensive green-screen set up was to demonstrate that this type of video can be produced in-house. I do an insert of video recorded simultaneously on a Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Pro webcam on top of the video recorded with my Sony DCR-VX2100 Digital Handycam® Camcorder. While you would definitely see a huge difference on a TV monitor, on a computer screen – even a good one – the difference is surprisingly hard to spot.

I have also included two versions of the video here, and an option to view the HD version on YouTube. Since YouTube now limits videos to ten minutes this version was edited to conform to YouTube limitations. Most of the last few minutes features the song “Leaning Westward”, new original music I composed to be used as the theme of the program. You may download or listen to the full version on my music site – The Open Source Music Project.

I have been working on posting meaningful materials from the Online Marketing Summit in Atlanta, and I hope you will find some benefit from the experiences I brought back from OMS Atlanta. I was among about 200 people in attendance and met some great folks.

Aaron Kahlow, Founder & CEO, Online Marketing Summit & Institute kicked off the event with a great presentation. He gave a good background on the purpose of the event and great advice on how to get the most out of each session. I selected the advanced track and without exception the speakers were all well-informed and gave up-to-date information. Questions from the floor were also a great part of the event.

During the lunch break Steve Woods had a very interesting presentation on understanding online behavior. I was pleased to win a copy of the book Digital Body Language from Steve – and of course I did get him to sign it for me!

I guess the one session I enjoyed the most – and got the most out of was by Stacy Williams, President of Prominent Placement, an Atlanta based Search marketing Company. She provided my quote for the day – “For every $1 spent on search marketing you get $9 in return”

I’ll have more on each session on the Web Strategies Podcast – including some interviews. Soon.

This podcast is a little odd in that it brings me full circle. Martin Joseph is our guest and it’s actually the second time we’ve recorded the same show. The last one was several months back – and well… the recording was just not up to my standards. I was experimenting with a sony digital audio recorder and thought the sound was going to be better. This is actually a much better interview.
This conversation is about two things – the Virtual Business Martin started and the strategy that took him from brick and mortar to the World Wide Web. Some of the links we talked about in the podcast include It’s Off Site Dot Com – http://www.itsoffsite.com/index.php – Secure computer backup online for businesses.

I don’t normally include the entire script as an episodes of The Web Strategies Podcast – but this is the first program I’ve produced in a while – and it’s a monologue – no guests. In a “normal” episode there would be no way to include a script – it would have to be a transcription since it’s really a live dialogue.

It is a good time to redefine the mission of the web strategies podcast. This program is dedicated to the business of the Internet

My original posting on March 18, 2008 said this:

Welcome to the Web Strategies Podcast program web site featuring program notes and links for each show. You may subscribe to our program here or through iTunes. The Web Strategies Podcast is a program dedicated to the technology and techniques of marketing your business on the internet. I am the site administrator and podcast moderator Tom Anthony.

How did we pick the name? Well, first the program is a podcast, and it is specifically about web strategies. That is where I live my professional life. In my day job I am the Vice President, Client Services for our program sponsor Web Teks, a Virginia based Consulting and eBusiness Solutions Firm.

Second – this is true so help me – while sitting in the waiting room at a routine doctor’s appointment I looked up this domain name on my Palm Treo phone. When I found it was available I actually purchased the domain through the browser on my cell phone. Seemed like a good sign.

Shortly we will post a series of programs with a focus on the strategic internet. We welcome your feedback and hope you will review our podcast on iTunes. Thanks for your interest.

Has the mission changed? No. It may be refined a little bit more but our goal is still to discuss strategy for marketing business on the internet. What clearly has evolved is the tactics to do that.

Literally speaking, strategy is to leverage a carefully devised plan of action to achieve a goal, or the art of developing or carrying out such a plan. The tactic is the art of finding and implementing means to achieve immediate or short-term goals.

So the strategy of keeping up with current technological trends is unchanged – but the technology surely has. New in this landscape are a number of factors to be aware of.

1. The continued growth of broadband usage is creating a paradigm shift in the concept of media delivery systems.

2. Mobile is the next big thing

3. Social Networking is not just for kids anymore

Each individual topic could be the source for discussion across many programs – and indeed books are written everyday about each respective subject. For this program let’s just engage in a high level description for each of these items.

First… The continued growth of broadband usage is creating a paradigm shift in the concept of media delivery systems.

Across the life span of all media or all technology for that matter is an arc of adoption and abandonment. I’ve covered this concept before and it may be better known as the Diffusion of innovation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_of_Innovations

Wikipedia has a really concise definition and the link can be found in the show notes on the program blog at http://webstrategiespodcast.com

“Diffusion of innovation is a theory of how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread through cultures. Everett Rogers introduced it in his 1962 book, Diffusion of Innovations, writing that “Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system.”

That book describes some specific behaviors which may be used to define how any technology is introduced into society… this seems to have been true across history – but quoting from the book – well paraphrasing from the book:

innovators - had larger farms, were more educated, more prosperous and more risk-oriented

early adopters – younger, more educated, tended to be community leaders

early majority – more conservative but open to new ideas, active in community and influence to neighbors

late majority – older, less educated, fairly conservative and less socially active

laggards – very conservative, had small farms and capital, oldest and least educated

So in the case of my second point for example, “Mobile is the next big thing”

That’s actually already to the “early majority” stage of adoption. Over a year ago I purchased the web domain “webstrategiespodcast” on my Palm Treo phone. Today I can download these episodes on my Blackberry Curve. As of this podcast the new iPhone-like blackberry Touch is all the rage… and so it goes.

You decide where in that curve newspapers fall. If you want to know where television is headed check out http://www.hulu.com/. Full episodes of TV shows from 24, Battlestar Galactica, and Heroes – to 30 Rock, The Office, and Family Guy. Did I mention free?

And that third concept of Social networking being not for kids anymore… when this podcast started just last year to web site Facebook was frequently dismissed as a kid’s site like MySpace. Not so much now. Facebook is regarded by many – including me – to be one of the best options for marketing exposure – and for many reasons. But that topic deserves its own show – which will be on Social Networking. Next time.

Thanks for listening to this web strategies … well update. I’m Tom Anthony.

After a fairly long hiatus, the Web Strategies Podcast to about to return. Like so many other podcast creators I knew this was the right thing to do – I have working knowledge of Web Strategies for business and the best way to widely share this knowledge is through podcasting. Getting the time to create the actual podcast while holding down a rather intense day job however, is problematic. For example – while I am making this post my lunch is cooking in the office microwave.

The content level here is about to improve – if nothing else by default… I have been asked to be a guest speaker on a radio talk program – and my recording of that interview will serve as the next new Web Strategies Podcast. See OMG

Hope you like the new look and feel of the site too – I use WordPress and just updated all the plug-ins too. Enjoy

While there have been shortages of episodes of The Web Strategies Podcast there certainly have been an abundance of changes lately. This is a time for introspection for me personally as I begin a new life. Statistically a majority of us have gone through a separation or divorce, and I know I need say no more in explaining why this venue has stood in silence for several months now. The focus of my world recently has been to transition to living solo which is going well. I am now living in Chesapeake, close to my office. Thankfully my professional life continues to flourish along with the success of Web Teks.

I guess the biggest news is the Open Source Music Project. With more time as of late to devote to my music, it brings me great comfort – and surprisingly others seem to enjoy it as well. This project has a corresponding podcast which I will link to as soon as iTunes gets back to me with an ID.

The Open Source Music Project was actually germinated during my association with a group knows at A2 in 2007. Although I am obligated to leave out most of the details, A2 is an effort to launch a new kind of digital entertainment. As far as I know that is still an effort in progress.

So what the heck is open source music?

I made it up. But the concept is to allow the free use of any individual tracks as the ingredients for a new song. When you record and produce your own music it is usually a series of separate audio tracks blended together. My inspiration came from getting such different results when mixing certain tracks together and leaving some out of the mix. Some of them are not so great – but a few really shine. On the Open Source Music Project site I encourage anyone interested to download these tracks and use them any way they like (under the Creative Commons Attribution License). If you take a listen let me know how abysmal that stuff really is. You may comment on any track on that site and if you really are a glutton for punishment subscribe to the RSS feed.

How can it be two months since I made an entry?? I wanted to give a quick shout out to Rick Party and his very hip site voiceover universe. This is web 2.0 at its very best. Even if you have no clue what a voice over is you will see the business savvy Rick possesses by visiting this site. It is in the context of the Internet, a true social network – with some pretty cool bells and whistles.

While knocking around last night I was watching a voice guy out west doing some tracks in real time. I think you will find this site worth a few minutes of your time to see how every niche – including yours – can benefit by understanding a little bit about social networking.

<itunes:summary>Tom Walker is the return guest and we talk about a dynamic digital catalog project that creates PDF documents and images personalized to the user's needs. This is a good illustration of how running a business has changed in the digital age.

We also discuss the ups and downs of tying together a line of business software or other third party application to your company website. What happens when some function on your web site is not doing what you think it should? How to cut though finger pointing and just get the darn thing fixed.

To return to the podcast click here: WSP 06 Marrying Integrators

I use a program called Urchin, which is the same basic engine as Google Analytics. (Well – actually I admit I use both.) Google Analytics is free and Urchin comes with the server hosting service. They both do essentially the same thing; give you information about how many people are visiting your site and where they came from.

In the screen shot below you can see stats from launch to this posting.

This second snapshot shows traffic recorded in the current calendar month.

Thanks to your interest the number of folks visiting and downloading the program is rising steadily. On average the number of visitors per day continues to rise exponentially. Thank you!

On the Extra section of the Web Strategies Podcast show six I also talk about the difference between tags and tags. Last time we talked about add-ons, tools for your browser that make it easier to see Meta tag information. That would include Keywords, Descriptions, and Page Titles mostly.

You should also be aware that your customers and colleagues may use tags to define bookmarks for various web pages they use. Over time the number of useful pages has increased to the point that Web 2.0 developers saw and filled a need to easily categorize our interests and share them. That’s the “other” kind of tag – and is best demonstrated by the site we mentioned last week – del.icio.us .

You may have noticed it took a little extra time to get the Web Strategies Podcast show six edited and posted. We hope to be weekly, but as a friend put it recently – “sometimes life just gets in the way”! We appreciate your support. Please invite your friends and colleagues to review our podcast on iTunes – just type in “Web Strategies Podcast” and we should come right up. The more reviews – the higher we rank – the more people will subscribe. Thanks again for your interest!

Podcast Extra:

Today’s Podcast Extra is about something called “Add-ons” for the Firefox web browser. Add-ons are mini programs that let you personalize your browsing experience – and if you are not using them, not only are you missing out – you may be drifting behind your competitors. There are all kinds of add-ons, the most popular are tools to help you block ads or download files.

The most useful (at least to me) are add-ons like web developer, which adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools. Perhaps it is a little to geek side, but it has been downloaded over six and a half million times. Not just web developers, but us plain folks are using this tool bar to see how web pages are made.

Another Add-on category you should be aware of is SEO tools. There are probably a dozen good tools out of about a hundred or so available as of this posting. I use KGen (Keyword Generator) which is an add-on that allows you to see what keywords are strong on visited web page. For my own blog pages it lets me see which words will most likely be indexed, and it is useful in figuring out which words to use for social sharing. My hot list if Firefox add-ons can be found here: http://del.icio.us/tomanthonydotcom/addon

We will discuss social sharing and tags in an upcoming episode.

Next week we talk about the Big Catalog Project, and Marrying Integrators…Not that kind of wedding … tying together a line of business software to a website.

Our guest

for the main segment this time out is Tony Scarola, one of our Web Strategies Podcast subscribers, a friend to the program, and a person who we trust as an expert network engineer and security expert. This time we talk about the age-old confrontation between the technicians and your staff.

WSP04 Podcast Extra Technology Audits

As a business owner you have either have money to burn, or a handle on your business technology infrastructure. If it is not practical to have a full time network engineer on staff, your company really needs an annual technology audit. Find a reputable integrator and hire them to send an experienced network engineer to your office. Make sure they physically inspect the network hardware in place, and inventory all routers, hubs, firewalls, servers and workstations in your system. Ask the company to chart out every machine on your network, how they are connected, and identify what services each is offering. This document should be easy to read and easy to understand. Here is a graphic representing the sample Network Map in Microsoft Visio.

Network Chart

Most of the time shortcomings in outdated hardware or software carry hidden costs. Most business owners simply cannot guess how much lost productivity is the result of a staff asked to make do with old dull tools. What you do not know can indeed hurt you when it comes to network security. If security were not your area of expertise, you would have no way to know how serious a risk your business faces every day.

Has your company experienced data loss due to hardware malfunctions, viruses, or other unexpected circumstances? One of the most common threats to business is the unintentional access to sensitive files by well meaning employees. The other more obvious threat is the deliberate destruction of data by disenfranchised workers. Both are preventable if someone in the know warns you ahead of time. All that said, what happens to your business if before work one morning an electrical fire takes out the bookkeepers office. How long would that take to recover without a working plan based on your current real world network? Makes you want to reach for Alka-Seltzer right now doesn’t it?

Tom Anthony host of the Web Strategies Podcast discusses what role Joe Cipriano played as an innovator of video on the internet, also You Tube technology and Diffusion of Innovations

The surge of you tube is not just a phenomenon; it is a fundamental change in how ordinary folks use the internet. Just about everybody I know across all age groups have at least watched a you tube video, a lot have posted video. The other day my stepdaughter posted one of the grandbaby doing sign language. Not only is that particular video truly amazing — the fact that grandmothers and great grandmothers all over the world are experiencing the best side of people — using technology — has put the technology in a whole new light. It is easy, it is fun, and it is not just limited to unsavory traffic.

If you accept this premise then the next logical conclusion is that business will follow suit.

There is an adoption acceptance curve for all technology. Everett M. Rogers in his 1962 book, Diffusion of Innovations, theorized that innovations would spread through society in an S curve, as the early adopters select the technology first, followed by the majority, until a technology or innovation is common. And while there are lots of exceptions, generally that theory holds up today.

Innovators

Early Adopters

Early Majority

Late Majority

Laggards

I would like to think I fall into the first bucket. This is not a brag – just letting you have the context here. Video on the internet – more or less – was invented by Real Networks in February 1997. In 1997 I produced for the internet a video clip of Joe Cipriano doing a commercial for the Simpsons on Fox TV. As far as I know – and I truly believe – that was the first use of Video as a promotional vehicle for TV announcers on the internet. Back in 1997, I was using a low bandwidth version optimized for 14.4 modem that was essentially a slide show.

Joe still has video on his web site – but it’s now a much better quality. He also has plenty of video on You Tube. Here is one I edited from the off air recording for him.

Now come full circle and compare that with the home video of our granddaughter doing sign language on you tube for grandmother and great grandmother. The point is – that if Rogers theory on the Diffusion of Innovations has any validly, if you are not using video on the internet for your business you will soon become a minority. It is tough to catch up.

Another Example

Here is an industrial video I produced a little over a year ago for Landmark Communications. They are the company that owns the weather channel and weather dot com – although this video was for a much smaller division of the company, Continental Broadband. It is a product demonstration for geeks. Enjoy.

From time to time Tom Anthony, the host of the Web Strategies Podcast, uses video or discusses technology like You Tube. This is where that video generally lives.

Just one week passed between show one and two and the first show has been downloaded 72 times. I am just astounded and very, very grateful. Thank you for your interest! We had very positive feedback from the first podcast; with guest was Tom Walker, President of Web Teks. We brought Tom back for this show and hope to feature him often. Tom Walker is a very smart guy when it comes to understanding business and the role of technology.

This week Tom discusses how to begin a web initiative, or perhaps more importantly how not to.

WSP 02 Podcast Extra

In our Web Strategy Podcast Extra we talk about a Web 2.0 social bookmarking site called Delicious. Actually it’s a clever URL that spells the word Delicious – like this http://del.icio.us. Now I love it, but I have to admit it’s a web site I used for many weeks before I actually had the ahh-haa moment.

After tracking 186 bookmarked web pages I found myself giving a link out to a particular tag. Oh – a TAG is a single word description of what the content relates to. Sort of like a keyword. That tag happened be web 2.0 – when I looked at the whole list it allowed me to view the subject in a much more organized way. Please take a few minutes to visit my Delicious page, where you’ll see tags relating to Marketing, Technology, and Pod Casting among others. The particular link I refer to in WSP 02 is http://del.icio.us/tomanthonydotcom/web2.0.

There is no such thing as a free lunch so I must say this podcast does have a business strategy. I believe, and our sponsor Web Teks believes, that by freely giving the same kind of information we give to our consultancy clients you may see a value in our level of expertise as it applies to your business. Otherwise, this is free.

I believe we have an interesting first program, talking about the difference between performance and return on investment.

In Wikipedia KPI is defined this way: Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are financial and non-financial metrics used to help an organization define and measure progress toward organizational goals. KPIs are used in Business Intelligence to assess the present state of the business and to prescribe a course of action.

While ROI is defined as equivalent a core financial; rate of return. It is the ratio of money gained or lost on an investment relative to the amount of money invested. Big difference, but both related. In Podcast WSP 01 Tom Walker gives us his views on the difference.

WSP 01 Podcast Extra

This week I wanted to offer you directions to get to one of the most remarkable resources on the internet: iTunes U. Apple accurately describes it this way: iTunes U puts the power of the iTunes Store to work for colleges and universities, so users can easily search, download, and play course content just like they do music, movies, and TV shows

Head and shoulders above the pack for my taste are three files I found on iTunes U featuring Author Thomas L. Friedman. First if you have not purchased the book “The World Is Flat” you are really missing the picture of how and why the world is transforming into a global economy. Do a power search for Friedman and you’ll find those files and a great talk about his new book, Green is the new Red White and Blue. This is Very worthwhile material. To find it go to iTunes and search for Thomas L. Friedman.

My Podcast Alley feed! {pca-19cf19ab8c04492f269146516fd48790}

Podcast Alley???

Podcast Alley is a podcast directory service, and I order for the Web Strategies Podcast to be listed there they require a link back to their site. That’s pretty clever actually. The way Google ranks website popularity is based mainly on the number of other web sites that link to your. So if every podcaster who wants to be listed in the Podcast Alley directory is forced to link back to the company website, it has the effect of raising the web site in the rankings.

I think we can do a whole show on search engines pretty easily, and still keep within the theme of our program – which is Business. A great TV program I have been watching talks specifically about this link back process in an entertaining way. The show is called Download: The True Story of the Internet and it’s on the Science Channel
